Organos and North Elementary have a split 7 inch record coming out this April. In celebration of the release, we have a few shows planned. What's REALLY exciting about this release is that we have had several friends and fellow musicians submit photographs of their choice to be a cover. This means we have about 50 or so different photos that will each get to be a cover for a 7 inch. Some of the folks who have submitted pics include: Missy Thangs (Love Language), Seth Kauffman (Floating Action), Eric Johnson (Archers of Loaf), Andrew Whiteman (Broken Social Scene), and MANY MANY MORE!! Pre-release sales start next week, and each 7 inch will include a digital download!

We're excited about this show! John will not be able to join us, so we've got the pleasure of having Ginger of Veelee filling in on drums! Joshua Carpenter resides in Asheville, NC and plays drums in the band Floating Action. Soft Company is the solo project of Missy Thangs (Love Language). This will be Organos' first show at the lovely new King's Barcade in Raleigh. Looking forward to it!

One Song/One Listen: Organos by Wild Bill Heroic!!

So there's been a ton of buzz about this Organos project... a ton, a serious ton. It's the future of the internet, things can be local and viral at the same time. COOL!

I'm naturally curious, so I'm going to head to her/their myspace or reverbnation or whatever the search gods lead me to first, pick a song I like the name of, and write a stream-of-consciousness reaction to said song. When the song is over I'll finish the sentence I'm on, even if I have to do so abruptly, and that'll be that. Genuine, instant reaction. Who likes free jazz? I do! I do! Skronk! Bleek! Florp!

I promise you, this is the first time I've heard this jam. Headphones on & here goes...

Organos "October"

Acoustic shuffles starting off, but holyshit I wasn't expecting that discord. Like a mad chord wandering among pretty chords and now there are these big fucking things walking in the background. They're like goddamn AT-ATs from Star Wars. She's "aaaah"-ing among these marching beasts, and that's all I can tell the percussion section is, it's a bunch of war machines but they're not headed to war. They're headed to the beach. They've packed their Martin 00s and they're packing umbrellas and they're getting sand in their beer. Here comes some more percussion, more recognizable stuff like hand drums and hand claps. Now the focus is off the war machines on vacation, and her "aaaah" on its own slides out with a final, pretty, chord that denies the intentional offset of the contrast chord.

Maria Albani, bassist in the wonderful North Carolina band Schooner, is the brains behind Organos. This E.P. is a little box of wonder. Spoons, handclaps, guitar, snare drum, tubs, whoknowswhatelse are all being played in various places to make short (7 songs in just over 12 minutes) and tuneful songs. Some of these tracks trip along lightly, others are slower and more intense. They’re all atmospheric (in other words, they press their mood onto you), and they leave you wanting them to keep going. To that last extent, it’s a bit like listening to a sober and more serious minded (and more female) Robert Pollard; the hook catches you, keeps you, and then drops you and you feel a bit weightless for a moment. Nothing wrong with that!

"It probably started when Pleasant broke up, so it started at the beginning of 2007," says Maria Albani of her latest project and solo vehicle, Organos. "I was still wanting to play but didn't have anybody to play with, so I started recording bass lines." From there she added parts: layered vocal melodies, clattering makeshift percussion—"I started using things like spoons and bottles," she says.
But this solitary outlet was meant to be just that. "I never really intended to put a band together. That was never the goal," says Albani.
Then Nathan White (aka Nathan Oliver) added a glockenspiel. Wes Phillips added percussion. The crew recorded an EP for Pox World Empire (release date TBA). Phillips, White, North Elementary's John Harrison, Schooner's Reid Johnson and Phillips' wife and Albani's long-time friend, Theresa Stone-Phillips, enlisted, and the band made its debut at last month's Liminal Festival. "When it's live, all the same instruments are used that are on the recordings of the song," Albani says. So the rhythmic quirk, playful melodies and nontraditional percussion are as prominent on stage as on Organos' inviting lo-fi recordings. With Nana Grizol. $5/ 9:30 p.m. —Bryan Reed

Theresa Stone-Phillips, the spoonist/vocalist wonder, had the idea to make some masks for the upcoming show at the Liminal Festival. She relearned some paper mache techniques, and replicated the CD cover art for the Limbs EP. My support will be wearing the masks during the show. I love the idea bc essentially, these friends are masked as me on their instruments bc I can not play everything live as recording has allowed me to do. I will be unmasked. I would've have never thought of such a clever idea! Thank you T!!

1st Organos show: Liminal Music Festival 9/26/09

Wendy Spitzer of Felix Obelix is putting on the Liminal Music Festival at the ArtCenter in Carrboro, NC. I was invited to join the line up for Saturday, September 26th at 8PM. Reid, John, Wes, & I ran through the songs last night to get a sense of how it can work. It was an invigorating experience for me to hear the songs being played live. I am more excited now than nervous about the whole "performing live" aspect of this. Not to mention, I have some of the most talented and inspiring musicians helping me make this possible. I really never thought too much about Organos being live bc I was afraid that the songs could wind up sounding too electronicy if I did it myself. Too many gadgets and shit would be needed to be able to pull off what I play on the recordings. And the thought of being on a stage by myself makes me want to cry,puke, & hide. I'm lucky to have these friends next to me. I don't think I could do it otherwise...

I was listening to the songs yesterday, trying to deconstruct the parts bc I was invited to do a show. I need to figure out what I can play & sing at the same time, and what parts to give to others who will be forming a band with me to do this. I am ecstatic and terrified. I feel good though with these people by my side: Reid Johnson, John Harrison, Wes Phillips, & Nathan Oliver.

This past weekend was spent at Pox studio in Durham, making an EP for my solo adventure I call Organos. For over a year, I have been recording on my own with the barest of essentials. My good friend, and fellow musician Nathan White (AKA Nathan Oliver)-has been encouraging me to give these songs a proper shot at a decent recording. He volunteered his time this weekend, and we worked hard to get as much done as we could. We succeeded at completing a total of 7 songs totalling 15 minutes. My songs are brief and to the point. Some are more like composition pieces rather than standard songs. Most of the tracks are built from a bass line, and then I add everything else from there. Vocals/lyrics are always last, getting placed where there is room. Sometimes, the vocals are sounds instead of words. Some songs are more instrumental than others. Non traditional instruments were used for percussive additions. Boxes, plastic bottles, spoons, a glass vase, stomps, & hand claps are some examples. All instruments and vocals were written and played by me. There are 2 tracks that will get some real drums added by my friend, and gifted musician Wes Phillips. We hope to release a small run of EPs on Pox in the Fall of 2009, entitled Limbs.
